The words of our co-founder, Bill W, provide the best definition of service in Alcoholics Anonymous:
“…an A.A. service is anything whatever that helps us to reach a fellow sufferer – ranging all the way from the Twelfth Step itself to a ten-cent phone call and a cup of coffee, and to A.A’s General Service Office for national and international action. The sum total of all these services is our Third Legacy of Service.” Bill W. also reminds us that individual A.A. members and A.A Groups rely on a worldwide service structure to effectively reach the newcomer.
A.A. Groups carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous at the local level, but Bill W. recognized that a wide array of services help us reach beyond the boundaries of our community.
What services do our Groups need to meet their collective goal of helping suffering alcoholics? Again, the words of Bill W. provide the answer: “Services include meeting places, hospital cooperation, and intergroup offices; they mean pamphlets, books, and good publicity of almost every description. They call for committees, delegates, trustees, and conferences. And, not to be forgotten, they need voluntary money contributions from within the Fellowship.”
Getting involved in service is a great way to deepen your own sobriety! Ask your Home Group how you can help or ask your sponsor how to get involved in service beyond the group. We find that what we get back far exceeds what we give.
