Finding a “Higher Power”

Have you tried to stop drinking on your own only to find that you could not?

Failed attempts to stop drinking are a common experience among alcoholics. No matter how hard we tried to control our drinking, no matter what methods we tried, we just couldn’t stop. The program of Alcoholics Anonymous teaches us to ask for help – from a power greater than ourselves. Many AA members will tell you that reliance on a Higher Power is vital to their recovery from alcoholism.

Does this mean that Alcoholics Anonymous is a religion, or requires adherence to a set of religious beliefs? Absolutely not! There is a spiritual basis to our program, but every individual is encouraged to find their own definition of a Higher Power. Among our membership you will find people who identify with every one of the world’s religious faiths – as well as agnostics and atheists.
